Hi all,

My parents have a C200 Benz. Its N reg so quite old and has 110k miles on the clock. Its a bit of a tank however its needs quite a lot of fixing. Needs new break pads, new break disc, new joints?, 2 new front tyres and a major service is due. Total cost of the work is just over £1000.

Is there anything else that is likely to go wrong with a old merc that's hit 100k miles?

edit sorry im looking whether or not the work is worth doing...

What is the purpose of the thread? Are you looking to buy it from them, and then get the work done, or is the work being done and then your looking to buy it from them?

Either way, i'm pretty sure you could buy another one of them for £1000.

Over £1000!? That's crazy money for some brake discs and pads, balljoints, tyres and a service! You should be paying little more than half that from a decent local garage.

It may be worth doing if you plan on keeping the car, but I wouldnt be spending £1k on it, the majority of the work needed sounds quite simple.
GSF/ECP or a local motorfactors should be able to source parts far cheaper.

Generally very reliable cars mechanically - the thing that killed mine off was the gearbox ecu which kept on putting the car into limp home mode (ie 2nd gear), Replacement was going to cost more than the car so I part ex'd it. I've heard of quite a few others having the same problem. MAF sensors also go on them quite often - about £300 from the dealers but much cheaper on ebay etc (standard bosh part)

i dunno the service is a major one.. the 100k one? apparently thats £450, the 550 is for tyres, replacing a rusted brake disc, brake pads, joints, and the usual i guess.

Hmm if its not really worth it i might trade it in and get myself a lil older car...

Every single car ever made requires everything you listed to be replaced in it's usable life span.

How much would you want for the car?

Where are you getting the quote from?

I can't imagine anywhere other than a main dealer would quote you £450 for a service (even a "big" one) on a 12 year old, N reg Merc. They'll change the oil, plugs, filters, and grease your door hinges, and that's about it. If anywhere wants more than £120 for that, they can run and jump.

As for the rest, I'd expect to pay:

Tyres - £50 each, £100 the pair.
Brake pads - £30-40 a set
Brake discs - £50-60 a pair.
Balljoints - get two complete lower arms from GSF for ~£80.

That's £280 in parts - at the absolute most, I'm sure you can get parts cheaper than that. Add in a few hours labour at £45 (local garage rate), you're looking at about £400 all in, not £550.

All that adds up to one hell of a lot less than a grand. Get another quote or two before you decide anything.

I have a C200 as a workhorse. Brilliant car and can be repaired very cheaply if you avoid Mercedes Benz dealers. All that should come to under £400 by a good independant. C-classes go on forever mine has hit 140k and still feels tight. Don't expect a high performance car though, just a reliable cruiser.

cool thanks for the tips will pass on the info. Thats what we were thinking, a nice work horse that no one wants to steal...
