fcz2fu8e7.exe, and msupd95948.exe.

These two files appeared in task manager the other night after a stumble in IE7, resulting in windows being unable to use my network port, total loss of restore points, very slow running, and an inability to repair or re-install using the XP cd.

I've searched and searched, and I can't get any results for these two files anywhere! I've had to remove the affected drive and do a clean install on my back-up drive.

None of the AV websites seem to have heard of these files either, yet, so this could be an early warning!

Also note that despite deleting all traces of both files they kept re-appearing!

The fcz file kept coming up with a warning message saying that the memory could not be read, Memory passed memtest no problem before reinstall though, and AVG7.5 can't find anything hanging around.

I would:

Start > Run > msconfig... hit enter... then go to start-up... and deselect all.

Now delete them two files.

Now reboot.

Open msconfig again... and look through the list and try to find stuff you dont know about. If it looks suspicious... google it and check.

Also install Spybot s+d and use that too.

Also install hijackthis... and run it.

It should have gone now... but if it hasnt... backup your data and reinstall Windows :p

^^(tj86)^^ Spent 6 hours re-installing last night!

Question is do I risk re-connecting the affected drive as D:, and delete partion/re-partion/format or throw it in the bin? (bearing in mind it's a 28GB maxtor ata-133)

normally deleting the file doesnt help as there is a background program which just puts them back again.. trick is to disable the background program too which can be a right pain in the arse.

Yep... normally stopping all of the processes from start-up inside msconfig... often this resolves this issue... if it doesnt then its time to start looking in the services tab which can be a right pain.... hijackthis normally fixes that though.

Often you may find that the virus stops hijackthis from downloading/running... to get it to run... try creating a new user... and running from there.

The affected windows installation is still on the drive, I was unable to wipe it.
I removed the drive and installed windows on what was my D: drive.

If I put the affected drive back in as D:, what are the chances of it killing off my new install?

Slim. Just put it in as D and then use Disk Management to delete the partition and creating a new one before formattting it.

Well I've not put it back on, any recommemnded free progs?

I've recently tried Avast on my home's XP system - working well so far, use to be with AVG but found it too resource heavy for my liking. I've also tried installing Avast on a virtual XP running on my MacBook with only 512mb RAM allocated to it, running smoothly :)

Yup AVG Free...

Just kidding.... well actually I'm not... AVG Free is pretty good... but I no longer use Anti-viruses... because I'm not dumb enough to get a virus :p
