C:\Windows Folder 13.5GB, is that the right size for a clean install?

I could have sworn I remember it being like 8GB?

I'm not sure if there are any 'leftover' files from my previous install, there shouldn't be, I did format drive before installing a second time.

Depends on the version of Windows you have installed (XP/Vista/7 + 32bit/64bit) and how many/which updates you have installed. My Win7 64 installation is a year old and totals 19gb.

I have deleted the pagefil and hiberfil.

The pagefil was 8 GB, I think the hiberfil was 6 GB.

So it would have been around 27 GB

It is now 13.5 GB but that sounds larger than I think I remember it being with pagefil and hiberfil gone.

Did you install all the updates? I notice after all the updates it gets bloated...

Saying that, after more than a year, my Windows folder is sitting in a never changing 23gb.

Ya, I'm fully updated.

Maybe that's it, updates added another 6 GB onto the intial 7.5 GB? Sounds like a bit of a stretch..

Sounds about right. I noticed similiar sizes after I did a fresh install on a laptop a month ago. Windows is very small when it's freshly installed from the disk... but then after all the Windows updates... :o

try this in cmd

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded /hidesp

removes the sp1 backupfiles should free up 5-6gb of space if you havent installed from a sp1 image

The OS reported size of the Windows directory is not accurate. There are many symlinked files that do not actually consume additional space but do report as usage.

The big ones are:

Left over Service Pack files (cleanup command above as well as cleanable through disk cleanup/system files)

Hibernation files

I just did that, said there was no backup file.

@sin

I already deleted hiberfil and pagefil so the only big one would be left over service pack files.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

this is where windows downloads updates before installing them , you can flush that dir to save space

Got to disagree there.

Vista yes, 7 on the other hand will run nicely on old celerons. The full install of W7 Ultimate takes less than half of my 30Gb SSd on my media PC.

Erm..

He said bloated, he didnt say it wasnt smooth, or didnt run very nice. Yes it does run on old hardware, its still a massive install.

13.5Gb sounds about right as I installed recently on a 60Gb drive (now superceded by a 256Gb). My boot drive was about 25% full after the install.
