Hi guys I've done a little searching but not much has popped up, building a new system in about a month or so for gaming, and I don't know which to pop for. They're both similar price and the 6000 seems to outperform the 6600 by a little. But I heard somewhere Intel are doing price cuts soon? Are AMD likely to match that?

I don't plan to, no. I heard because of the voltages temps can get high on the AMD... But I'm past overclocking now, just want a system I can build and get straight to playing :)

The thing is...getting the e6600 to outperform the AMD is as simple as just changing the FSB in the BIOS from 266 to 300 or 333 mhz. Everything in your system will probably do that on completely stock voltages and in the future if you want something faster the e6600 should be able to do 3.2ghz in the worst case scenario...3.8-4ghz in better cases :P

You call 3.2GHz a bad overclock?

Tbh, E6600 still outperforms the AMD 6000 at stock.

bah, maybe I will overclock, used to love it, took my 1.8GHz Athlon to 2.44GHz on air :D

I probably wont take it that far with a C2D though, anyone have any unclocked/overclocked E6600 benchmarks? There's not many people with a 6000 to have got any feedback from

Depending on your cooling a E6600 will do 3.2-3.6GHz without too much hassle unless you're unlucky.

You'll be very lucky to get more than 3.1-3.2GHz out of the 6000. Overclocked the AMD is no competition to C2D.

I think that is a bit optimistic; I just read a review comparing both at stock and they have quite similar performance unless you do a lot of video encoding ;)

I never said it was bad...on a e6600 from 2.4 to 3.2ghz it's nothing impressive and that OC is pretty much guaranteed. That's why I said "worst case scenario"

I agree, I think it is impressive getting a 33% Overclock on the stock speed at no extra cost. Whats even better the vast majority of the e6600 CPUs hit 3.2Ghz.

I put mine in and booted at 8x400 (3.2Ghz) straightaway with no voltage increase!

The main reason I dont want to overclock is that I'm wanting a mainly silent, so not going to have a high performance CPU cooler and quieter case fans.

What coolers are you guys using for overclocking the C2Ds? and how loud are they?

also the Thermalright Ultra 120 can be very quiet and an extremely good performer when combined with the right fan

I use a Tt Sonic Tower to overclock my opty to 2700Mhz and if I enable fan speed control on the mobo or via software the fan doesn't run at all (temps about 27C using IE) until I start a game spinning to only 1000 rpm (temps about 42c gaming) so i hear only my PSU 14cm fan which BTW I read is almost silent...
