just recieved mine. however, its my first build and the bit thats perplexing me the most is the application of the thermal paste. i have no idea how much is too little or too much and i cant seem to find a decent illustrated guide. should i put so much on so that you cant see the metal of the processor and heasink or should it be a thinner layer than this

any help is appreciated

ive built 6-7 c2d systems recently, with 3 e6600 and several e6300, imo i would put on enough arctic silver e.g. to cover the entire processor surface, just enough so you cant see the silver plating through it, i think too much is a bad thing, but ive also used the zalman stuff that you paint on like nail polish and tbh the temp on a e6300 with arctic 3 and an identical e6300 with zalman stuff were comparible in temp, ie. 43-45 overclocked to 2450

im just finding this realy tricky. gotno idea whatsoever how much i should be applying. so, should i be applying it to the heatsink as well.some pics would be really helpful

I gather that you bought OEM processor with no stock cooler. It usually arivers with quite a lot of thermal paste on it, in a thin homogeneously thick layer.

Last time I used a tiny amount (e.g. a small lentille size should be fine) of arctic silver which I spread on the heatsink by using an old plastic card. Spread it enough to ensure that it would cover the processor surface with giving it some extra surface around it. When you set it make sure that they make a good contact, a very slight shear (1-2mm) could help spreading it nicely. Later on the temps readings would tell you how successful you have been.

mine came with not enough on it , showing 80 degrees in bios had to put some more on . i would put a very thin layer on , whack the cooler on , start it up and go straight into bios and monitor the temps for 20 mins or so . also you could turn cpu fan control off to bring temps down even further
cheers

In that case you must've seen how it was spread. What I have read on this forum is that people (most often heavily overclocking) buy another cooler (Arctic Cooler Pro 7, Zalman95(7)00 or Tuniq Tower) for a C2D.

In your situation, although you might've done everything properly (thermal paste wise) you might not see the effect as the stock cooler does not perform so well.

If you are not going to OC then you should be fine.

i have an e6600 with a tuniq heatsink, on a ds4,
i applied a small amount in the center of the chip, about the size of a grain of rice. applied the heatsink and turned it from side to side to spread the paste out.

Im getting idle temps of 19C with fan on medium, seems really low, dunno if monitor is dodgy
Havent tested it under load yet
