Cable latency problem

I'm on Virgin 10mb on the Scientific Atlanta EPC2100R2 modem that came with it.

When raiding in WoW I start off fine, then I quickly start to get casting lag as the fight progresses and a billion spells etc are going off. It increases each cast by about 0.2 secs. I never used to get this on my trusty old adsl line at my old address.

What could this be? I've updated my ethernet drivers but to no effect. I'm guessing it's either the modem, the fact that I use a 10 meter ethernet cable or some configuration settings such as port issues that isn't allowing enough bandwidth?

If anyone has any idea I'd really appreciate before I go splashing out on a new modem.

Dont use USB, use a cat5e patch cable. I think USB cant go more than 5m without a repeater unit?

Packet loss effects wow badly, is there any on your connection?

According to this no: But that test only ran for about 2 seconds, the problems arise after 10+ secs. I have a feeling it might be something along those lines though. I'll be switching to a 1 meter ethernet cable tomorrow.

Length of ethernet cable makes absolutely no difference at all. Do you have a router or are you plugged straight into the modem?

I'm not sure if this is an issue:

TCP Statistics for IPv4

Active Opens = 3930
Passive Opens = 10
Failed Connection Attempts = 10
Reset Connections = 198
Current Connections = 45
Segments Received = 984672
Segments Sent = 1060031
Segments Retransmitted = 3245

Wondering if it's a WoW problem, have you searched for related stories?

Might be soundcard related. You could test by running the EXE with a -nosound switch.

I have done searches but I've yet to find someone with a similar problem. Most searches come up with soloutions to latency issues etc.

I currently use the onboard sound, at my previous address on my old pc (where I had no problems) I was using a sound card.

Interesting it seems it might well be the onboard sound. I've disabled it and have a Xonar on order, I just ran toc25 and almost no casting lag! I'll have to see properly tonight when I raid without sound.

sound can be the biggest culprit for online (and offline) game lag.
I know you've ordered a new card now, but can you alter the sound bitrate the game uses to see where the threshold lies between good and bad performance?
I remember having to do this on some games like BF2 and UT

It might be worth seeing if you can get rid of that modem for one of the newer ones. My original cable modem was causing me all types of issues, until VM replaced it.

I'd never have thought this was to do with sound but I've enabled some options such as Use Hardware (might have had something to do with it :p), which I used to have enabled. I'll see tonight.
I've already replaced the modem once. The first one was a catastrophe, this one has been fine apart this, however Scientific Atlanta is not the greatest of makes I think?

They're better than the Ambit heaps of crap VM usually use. Decent enough that Cisco bought them out at least.
