Trying to sort out a friends dodgy virgin connection, it's only been duff since january :(

Connection is stupidly slow, most things time out, even the modem info pages, BUT this forum is fine , not a clue what is going on. I can't even drag the machine home as it's the net connection that is busted, machine is running fine.

Any ideas? Not dealt with cable stuff for a while so i'm out of ideas (apart from the BFH)

Cheers

do you know what modem it is?
it looks to my untrained eye like it's a problem connecting at the required rate, iirc ntl/by/virgin changed the settings used by modems in some areas to a higher one that allowed more bandwidth to be used (QAM modulation or something got changed from 64bit to 256bit), and one or two of the older models of modem have problems with it.

Also can you/have you tried another PC on his connection to rule out networking problems with his PC?

It's an old Motorola Surfboard, bon't know the exact model number (home now), so it could be a problem with that i suppose.

I'm off back to his place on tuesday with my lappy to take his pc out of the loop.
