My girlfriend has a problem with her cable modem - Please have some sympathy and try and help as Ive just spent the last hour with comment like "Theres a wire coming from a box"....

She has Virgin Broadband and im only really au fais with ADSL - so bear with me.

Basically her "Cable" Light on her modem is flashing. Ive got her to go into the status screen (which took about a year to explain how to use a cmd prompt), and the status shows as:

Cable Status: Ranging Complete
Upstream Status: Ranging
DownStream Staus: Locked

Any idea what this means?

It happens every now & again & usually doesn't last long, Tell her to try swtiching it off then on again & if that don't work to ring the Free number, It should have an Auto message on if there's an outage.

shes tried that
its been like that for a week...

Am i right in saying that its something outside of hers - like beyond the router?

Normally its best to turn it all off, remove the coax wire and re-connect it then power it on.

If this doesn't work then call them and they will tell you to do it all again but this time it will work as is by magic. lol

ive had her switch routers too now.
Still the same - so everything has been disconnected and put back together,

If it still doesn't work with just a PC and the modem (i.e. no routers or anything else they don't provide), just phone them.

Sorry i meant modem not router
It definately doesnt - but shes rang them and they say there is no problem!
