Hello,

I am trying to setup a network so that I can have my PC and 360 connected at the same time, so I got a Linksys BEFSR41W Router. Also, I am with Telewest 10mb Cable.

I can get it all setup so that my PC recognises the router, and I can access the web setup page, but there is no connection between the rotuer and the modem, meaning I have no net access when it is all setup.

When i set it up, i turned EVERYTHING off, and even left them overnight, then I booted the modem, left it for a few minutes, then booted the router, then left that a few minutes, and finally my PC. I went through step by step with the linksys instructions too, but to no avail.

I am wondering if it is to do with the MAC addresses, because while everything is still on, if I switch the ethernet cables so my PC is connected directly to my modem, the net comes straight back up.

I have tried MAC cloning on the router settings which doesn't work, and as I said, I have left things with no power overnight in an attempt to sort it out. But nothing is working and I am at a complete loose end here. PLEASE can someone help?

I spent 2 hours last night searching google and trying things out but nothing works :(

Here are some pics of the router setup incase some can see a problem straight away:

OK, firstly thanks for a comprehensive post, it helps everyone concerned.

Going for the simple option forst check your cables are connected securely (listen for that click and check nothing has got into the port that could cause a pin not to make contact - it's highly unlikley but possible). Then Hit DHCP Renew on the status page and see what happens ;) if it's not that then read on ....

Your cable modem (as long as it's power cycled) will support more than one MAC in a 24 hour period, so as you've already proved the modem works when directly connected then working your way back from that the first thing i'd say test is the RJ45 cable between the modem and the router, shove it between your PC and the router and see if you can still log into the router ? As you already know the cable from your PC to the router works so after that it's down to the router.

If it[s not that bit of cable then report back and i'll that works have a look at the router logs and the modem logs (modem is 192.168.100.1).

If none of this works post back :)

BACK OF THE NET!!!!

It was the cable, I was using the wrong type, so I used a proper CAT5 cable and it worked first time. I can't believe I wasted 2 hours last night and it was down to the cable.

WOOHOO!!!!
