I currently have a psu with 2x6 pin pci connectors and i notice many new card need 8 pin or 1x6 and 1x8. Is there an adapter i can get to go from 6 to 8 pin or do i need to buy a new psu?

There are adapters, but I'd avoid them. Your best bet is to ensure you have a decent PSU. Last thing you want is all your juice coming off one rail when your PSU isn't designed for it.

What PSU is it?

As Diddums said, you can get adapters but personally I'm a bit wary of using them. The 6-pin PCI-E can provide 75W where the 8-pin can provide 150W. If you use an adapter for the 8-pin, you're relying on the cables you're attaching it to being able to provide 150W without burning/melting/shorting. This should be fine with a good quality PSU but generally even the best manufacturers build to a price and if a cable needs to supply 75W, they'll make sure it can but don't provide much headroom to save a few pence - hence my general mistrust of adapters.

I thought as much, i just wanted somebody to say yh its fine go for it. What psu is the best bang for buck these days, i dont want anything over the top just a good 650w psu will do.

Some graphics card manufacturers do put an adapter or two in the box with a new card.

They should be fine to use as long as the PSU is decent.
