Cable = Scart. What's better?

My mum has a nice new 50" plasma. I've noticed that cable tv doesn't look very good.

Upon investigation it looks like the cable box is scart. What better connection types are there with cable do you know? Or is it a case of 'time to move over to sky?'

EDIT: Wrong forum. Make yourselves useful and answer anyway ;)

I'll check about the RBG later.

The TV is HD 'Ready'. Although i know there has been a lot of stigma over the word 'ready'.

I was just wondering if telewest or sky have a better connection type than scart (unless scart is known for being good that is)

Scart will carry a high quality picture as long as the cable box is set to output RGB, and the scart cable is fully wired, and the TV scart socket you're using accepts RGB. No reason why Sky should give a better picture than cable.

Dig out the manual for the cable box and your TV and see if they both do RGB and through which scart sockets. You may also need to change settings in the menus of one or both.

You also need to make sure it's a 'fully wired' Scart lead to do RGB over Scart.

But why doesn't she get one of the new HD 'TV Drive' boxes from Telewest? Then she'll get the full benefit of her 'HD ready' TV, plus Telewest's equivalent of Sky+ :)

I'll ask them how much to upgrade :)

Yep, get your RGB enabled.

I swear my role in life is to be some sort of RGB angel. Wherever I go, friends houses, hotels, holiday cottages, even electrical superstores(!) I end up switching on RGB in the menus of DVD players, Sky boxes etc....

Then I leave, and people wonder at what strange visitation has magically improved their picture quality... :)

Also remember that at 50", any standard definition digital TV picture is always going to look a bit compressed and blocky. RGB is definitely best, but without some kind of sophisticated upscaling device you can't actually improve the resolution.
