Looking to get one of these for a job, any recommendations on what to buy or the minimum to spend for a decent one? Some of the cables may be near the limit of 100 meters so need a good, strong tone to find it at the other end.

Flukes a good brand, never got on with their tone kits personally.

Used lots of makes and fluke we're the only ones that were a pain to ID cables from what I remember. Greenlee Amps and oscillators have never let me down.

How do you mean effectively?

You can use the phone app but it’s very poor. I only ever use it in the mode with the switch where you plug all the transmitters into the remote sockets and it flashes the lights on the switch when you activate the transmitters.

In hindsight, probably not the best option if you just want a toner. It is a truly phenomenal toolkit though.
