who does cable internet ? is it just blueyonder ? are cable any good, are they limited bandwidth wise, what speeds can you get and is it better than adsl ?

i do about 3gb of bandwidth per day (on a 1mbit connection) and would do a lot more on higher speed.

i fancy cable because it appears more reliable and also upload speeds are a lot higher, which is good because my server is on 100mbit and it sucks to waste all that speed uploading at 30kb/s.

unlike adsl cable's speed is constand no busy time droops generaly cleaner connection (optical cables)
ntl virgin telewest to name a few others.
when iw as living in england with my ex we had ntl it was far better than any adsl ive used and the best thing is i told em to turn it off 4 years ago when i left and it got left on and she still uses it for free

As he sed ^^

cable is very reliable and has no limits to it. NTL and Telewest are now merged together and called Virgin Media. They offer up to 10MB/s and 20MB/s is coming out at the end of July.

I know this doesn't sound a lot compared to ADSLs 24MB/s but you have to take in that on ADSL you actually get nowhere near 24MB/s :)

I have been with Virgin Media (Telewest) for so long that they wasn't even called Telewest (or Blueyonder) and have had no problems with them at all.

I highly recomend them to you and hope you enjoy :)

Upload isn't always faster than adsl, 10mbit has 384k upload now and will be going to 512k, ADSL max is 448k upload. Traditional adsl has 384k, ADSL2 has 1mbit+. If that's your main reason for making the change you may want to read up a bit more.

Cable is only provided in the uk by Virgin media (formerly NTL and Telewest).

I've been with Blueyonder since day one (when BBI worked.. only to die nationally on day two!), thing is i can measure overall downtime in days over a period of years, Speeds have always been as near advertised as made no difference and prices have always gone down and speeds up. Yes the free mail/news can be a bit flaky but in the overall scheme of things it's been more reliable than any of the adsl connections I look after through work, just a shame I don't get staff pack anymore though :(

Im on NTL 10meg and get 512mb up at the minute?!

Now you're on Virgin Media 10mbit and you're one of the area's that's had new configs rolled out, not all have and few if any of the TW ones have as yet.

NTL have had the 512k practically since day 1 of 10mb i think:)
it's TW who had the lower upload and are being upgraded:)

I've had cable here for about 6 years, and apart from the early days (dodgy install and modem) no real problems, certainly not since I got the tailfin modem 5 years ago :) (which just got replaced the other day for a newer one).

I had a few issues in the first year with NTL (been with them for 5 years now) I had a 6month bad patch, lose of connections and all sorts, they sorted it and it's been rock solid since, download at full bandwidth if not mnore at time and 15 - 20 pings so I'm sticking to see how the 20meg's go !! :D
