Am currently searching for hard drive

the raptor seems very expensive....

my question is, is there much of a performance gain from a drive with 8mb cache as against the 16mb cache?

A small amount when writing mainly, but read will improve too. Generally yes, and it may seem smoother in games. I wouldn't exactly mind the extra cache .

There doesn't seem to be a large range of 16Mb drives...I found the Samsung P120 range and also of course the Raptor..

Reading good and bad re the Samsung ..

I am looking at possibly a Raid 0+1 set up....

I have exactly that. I'll upload a pic of my new (1 day old) RAID0+1 4x80GB hitachi Sata-II drive setup in a few hours - currently priming an overclock at the second.
