What do I look for when buying parts for a computer generally used for cad applications?

OP: It depends entirely on how complex the CAD system is.

For example, where I did my placement used NX4. They even had brand new quad core rigs, but as CAD is written so badly it runs a bit slow with complex parts. Also NX4 is old and only runs on a single core.

If you run CAD then a laptop is fine if the work is just for Uni purposes. If you intend to run complex assemblies then you need a decent rig with a decent graphics card.
