Hi guys,

I'm struggling to find the perfect case for me, i thought it was a Lian-Li PC-71AF, but apparently its not available in the uk at all at the moment so now im considering my options, one of which is to design and build my own. So im just wondering, what is the best software to use to design a computer case?

I'm thinking more along the lines of Autodesk Inventor. It's fairly easy to use if you want to design your own case and has a very good application for rendering your finished model.

thanks for the replies guys, i would use it to design the shapes and get dimensions from it so i can get some costings. ill give both of those a go and see how i get on.

at the end of the day i know exactly what i want my perfect case to be like, but im not sure if its possible, so hopefully this will help.

Google Sketchup is a very good program to use, even more so as it's free!
Another one worth trying is Solidworks, but it takes a fair bit of getting used to :)

yeah, i did a bit of solidworks at school and university so i should be quite used to it already, and i know its good but im not sure what else is out there and if its better.

Solidworks and ProEngineer are up there with the best.
However, its costs money. Lots of money.

If you can get o with it, there is a program called blender. I hated it.
I use Solidworks myself!

Don't even get me started on Blender! Most complicated piece of **** ever programmed.

if you are fairly new to design then sketchup is the way to go. It's fairly easy to learn the basics and can play around with it for hours or do a couple of basic online tutorials to get upto speed. The other programs like 3d max and blender are a bit OTT for this i would have thought.

i totaly agree thats why i own a copy autodesk suite which gives me nearly every autodesk program and 3ds max is the program to use and theron what 3d software do you own as if you dont own any your gonna probily have to go with sketchup but its basic but it should do the job

well i do have a solidworks2003 disc that i borrowed from my old uni and forgot to give back to them, and i know someone who has autocad and autodesk inventor so i can get hold of the suggestions, just dont wana waste my time learning how to do it in one program when another is much better.

I will look forward to seeing the processes you go through if you do decide to make your own. Please make a worklog if you do!

just use whats easiest for you it should be very simple to design a pc case but building it should be hard part of it i wouldnt even no were to begin the build

yes me too, hopefully ill have a good brainstorm and put something on paper, then CAD it, and if the design is any good the starting point will be obvious, fingers crossed!
