OCUK - Wonder if you could help me here.

My dad has been asked to carry out a job in London that involves the hire of one of his 1.5 tonne diggers and his own labour for 5 days a week for a month. This is to including transport, diesel costs and the hire of the machine. The commute from my current location is around 100 miles and he will be staying in London for obvious reasons (this will all be paid for). As my dad only really does local work and personal renovation projects with his machines, he is completely clueless as to what the London prices are for this type of work (groundwork).

The question is this.. what sort of prices should he be looking at charging per day/week to include his labour and the hire of the machine? Wondering if anyone who lives in or around London or anyone who has any experience in this would know?

Thanks OCUK!

Would it not just be his normal charge, plus the cost of travel, accomodation and expenditure for the time in London?

I would assume the reason that they have requested your Dad is because of his experience/reputation and cost, unless you have already agreed that the cost is going to be different to his standard rate.

London rates are a lot higher than my local rates - it has already been agreed that the cost is going to be different to his standard rate because he wants to be fair. We were just wondering what kind of rates are being charged in the London area.

Will they be willing to pay 'London rates'? Maybe there's a reason they have chosen a non-London firm.

Thats a very specific question, surely your dad knows someone in the trade who will be better at answering that.

Infact, why are they even going through so much hassle and expense just for a higher of a 1.5 tonne digger for a month? :\

It is a local friend of my dad's who has been contracted to do work in London and he requires the hire of a digger + driver. My dad initially bought the diggers to do his own work however recently he has been hiring them out as it's better than them being sat doing nothing.

Well why don't they hire a mini digger locally? Even at 'London rates' I'm sure it'll be a lot cheaper than putting up your dad for a month on top of other fees.

Don't ask me.. All I have been told is that my dad has been asked to price up for the hire and his own labour, and he asked me to find out? :p Would £200 per day be reasonable (8 hour day plus hire/diesel)?

How would we know if its reasonable? I bet there arent any digger drivers on here, who know how much salary is good, how much contract rate is classed as and what outgoings are involved ;)
