I've just had to phone Sky up as I was getting no signal on my sky+ box. I ended up talking to someone with a very heavy Indian accent, so much so that I had to get him to repeat the instructions 3 times everytime. I couldn't care less what country I end up ringing so long as I can understand what they are saying and are speaking English past infant level  I'm tempted to send a letter of complaint into Sky over this as something that could have been fixed in a couple of minutes ended up taking nearly 10 minutes due to me not understanding him, my question is, would Sky actually do anything with the letter or would it go into the round filing tray on the floor? :(

you know this wasnt an indian call center, it was just located in luton :p

Could possibly have been India, then again it could also have been Manila in the Philippines you got through to. Either way am sure there's a reason many companies are now advertising the have staff based in UK only call centre's!

Did the person you spoke to manage to resolve the issue with your Sky system btw?

I worked for Natwest for 3 years, who claim to have UK only call centres. That is true, however they hired a huge number of foreign people who had very thick accents and little understanding of the language.

In a situation similar to yours, the team leaders would have no sympathy with you, unfortunately. Of course, if you send a letter higher up, it's likely that they have to deal with it in the same way as any customer complaint, so it will be looked at. In my experience, foreign staff tend to be students who are paying a lot for their education and so are willing to work a lot more than locals, which means they are more appealing to call centre managers.

Damn Scots. ;)

iv been in the same situation(well kinda) i lost money on both occasions because of bad English on the other side. well i gave up, because if i were to continue people would have accused me for racism of some thought.

I've made quite few calls to telewest since i got broadband off them (I seem to destroy their modems for fun)

I'll never forget calling once, and speaking to this northern lass... I felt so bad when I said to her I was so sorry, but I just couldn't understand what she was saying and for her to please pass me over to one of her colleagues...... pretty sure she was scouse, but god, I just couldn't understand a word, I had to actually concentrate so hard to understand her I had my eyes closed !

Last time I called Sky, I got through to the Scottish place. The woman on the phone spoke so fast I couldn't understand her. :o

That'll be the call centre in Fife possibly.

But then to us Scots, the English talk considerably slow. Like Red Dwarf, "White Hole". ;)

However I take real offence to anyone who can't understand us.

I phone England and Ireland (sorry not wales guys) on an almost daily basis for lots of people/reasons(work). I can understand them all.

Actually I get quite turned on when its the young Irish ones ;) :p

Scots are easy to understand for me, probably because my best mate when I was at school had a mother with an extremely thick Glasweigan accent. Took me about 2 years to get my head around what she was saying - up until then I'd just nod and smile :)

I can understand normally - she was just speaking exceptionally fast. Maybe she had drank too many cups of coffee. :D
