Quick question. My girlfriend if flying to America today from england and i looked on skype and its £5 a month for unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles to usa but does her phone have to been with america or as she has a uk contract and she is in america it will be fine to still call? because the subscription on skype says choose country/region to call so would i put america then right?

She'll be charged to recieve the calls in America if she's using a UK SIM, I'd recommend she picks up an American SIM just to answer calls until she returns, or uses Skype but is VERY careful to only use it on WiFi.

agree with above, try and get an American SIM card. Unless you're on o2? then can use TUGO if wifi is freely available.

If you get a Three sim with unlimited data, you can use it in the USA as if you were in the UK, so Skype would be free.

Why does nobody ever bother to check this sort of thing in good time? Had you asked this 2 weeks ago your girlfriend could have got herself a 3 SIM and you and her could have phoned each other non-stop whenever you like for no extra charge. Now you are stuck with whatever ripoff roaming charges her current provider has.

If she uses her phone in the US the caller will pay UK rates and she will pay to receive the call - a significant amount, making this way of keeping touch not a particularly great one.

Your best bet really is going to be for both of you to use Skype.

Perhaps look into posting her an activated 3 PAYG SIM if she has an unlocked phone and then you call that? That might work. It's hassle though.

Watch out, that has to be activated for 30 days before it will work internationally.

Potentialy not everyone plans these things months in advance. Emergencies, work and so on.
