A friend in Sweden has a Skype phone. My router (Draytek Vigor 2800VG)allows me to connect a normal phone and converts it into a standard SIP VOIP phone. Would this allow me to call Skype for free? Or are the two systems incompatible?

Thanks.

Not really the answer your looking for, but why not just install Skype and get yourself a headset or Skype compatable phone.......easier, surely??

You can't install skype on his router?

I don't think skype uses SIP protocol so I don't think it would work. You might want to look at wireless skype phones, they are avaliable <£100 nowadays

Thanks. I don't really want to buy a Skype phone because that defeats the point of saving money. It would be cheaper to carry on calling using a normal phone (for a while at least). But thanks for the answers.

You could ask them to sign up for a free SIP account (doesn't have to be the same provider, as you can call between different SIP providers for free also) - they will then be able to use their headset with the softphone provided
