Domestic rats are much much smaller than wild rats. Wild rats can be as large as a cat (I've seen them in my own garden occasionally). It's probably a rat, and you've got a family of them nearby.
I'd love to see an un-doctored photo of a wild UK rat as big as a domestic cat..... And I've seen and caught more wild rats than I care to try and count.
A necessity for farmers and people with large amounts of grain for birds and suchlike about, a constant battle.... Poison is not an option as a domestic dog or cat may eat a poisoned carcass and it then itself becomes poisoned. Shooting or trapping is the only realistic way although I am experimenting with a home brew electrocution system
