Lo all,

I'm in a shared house at uni (6 of us, 4 use the net a fair bit, 2 hardly at all). We are on the 60GB a month package because our last months usage was so high while we were on the 25GB package.
Now were already over our 60GB usage for this month and I'm starting to get sceptical about their calculations.

I've asked the other guys that use the net what they have done today.

Apparently today our usage has been as follows, It's cumulative and in MB:

00-00 1,754.63
02-00 4,127.17 I can sort of understand this as people were up until about 2:00am
03-00 4,140.39
04-00 4,140.86 so far so good
06-00 6,527.86 This is bs, 2 and a half gig when no one was awake in the house
08-00 8,915.55 again another 2gb while we were all alseep (lazy house!)
10-00 11,303.97 None has been downloading anything yet we use another 2GB in an hour. Some ISP's give you that for a month!
12-00 13,725.57 bs again
14-00 16,188.82 this may be true but I doubt streaming five live for the second half of the Newcastle match is going to account for 3GB!
16-00 18,702.43Another 2 GB just from two or three of us browsing the internet normally.

As of 16:00 your bandwidth usage over today 18.26 GB.
This seriously cant be right I fail to see how normal browsing over a day can take up 18GB! our HDD's would be full up in a week!

We have wireless but it's password protected so I don't think it's our neighbours although I'm tempted to change the pass-key just to be on the safe side.

I wouldn't care too much but we're being charged 60p for every GB we go over our 60GB limit and it's my account they are direct debiting.

We are already at 69GB and there's still almost a week left of the month!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

change the WEP key?
Don't trust the people you live with? Clearly if it's constant through the night somebody is downloading something....or the ISP is wrong.

Monitor the usage yourself and compare it to what Newnet quote?

No good for your current bill, but it would at least give you some idea in the future. Depends on either a) users installing some metering app (and keeping it running) or b) your router doing SNMP (or better still, having access to statistics for every switch port).

Any chance you could talk me through that last option?

I've been on the newnet boards and there are a fair few people with the same problem. It's not the neighbours, I've been monitoring the connected computers to my router and there has only been myself and one other member of this household.

Depends on your router.

If it supports SNMP, there's PRTG (Windows app, free for one interface IIRC), MRTG (free, runs in Perl, generates HTML) or Cacti (free, runs in PHP and uses a SQL database, web-based).

If it doesn't, you're largely stuffed as far as monitoring goes.

I've got PRTG working,
it's monitoring my main IP (192.168.0.1) then all the traffic over LAN and all the wireless traffic. The only problem is it's reporting 0 kbit/s for 192.168.0.1 but it is logging the traffic over the other two. Should I just add up the totals for wireless and LAN and not worry about it? I just thought everything would be coming in and going out of that i.p?

Thanks for your help!

Remember newnet count uploads as part of your monthly allowance so upload intensive apps such as p2p/torrents etc may take a whack out of that if pcs are left on.

You used in excess of 18GB in a single day and don't know what's generating the traffic?

Time to call the exorcist.

AmaTex, it's not uploads, no one used P2P at all yesterday. It is a problem at Newnet's end, they have posted a service update saying that they are fixing it. However, they are saying that it's only been a problem since Tursday. I'm pretty sure it's been going on since I joined them at the start of October.
