Calling all sci-fi geeks... star wars question :P

Slowly working my way through the novels atm, on the second book of the X-Wing series 'Wedge's Gamble' at the moment. Great books.

There is absolutely nothing stopping new Star Wars films from being made, they don't have to contain the characters from the original and prequel trilogies.

Look at Bioware and the Knights of the Old Republic games, the games are set 3600-4000 years before the original trilogy and they have a story that rivals, and in many ways surpasses the films.

All they have to do is pluck a time period out of thin air that hasn't been touched, create an epic story of good vs evil and hey presto, instant Hollywood Blockbuster material.

That is the great thing about the Star Wars Universe, it doesn't have to rely on the original trilogy to tell new stories that can be insanely popular. You have a universe where the cultures and organisations within have existed for millenia, it's story making gold.

I don't think the expanded universe has spoilt the movies in any way.

But i think when you look at the bigger picture, they are overshadowed by the sheer amount of content thats has came out for the expanded universe, games, tv, comics, novels etc. They're just the tip of the iceberg in comparison.
