Calling all skydivers!

I've always wanted to try this but the closest dropzone to me has a weight restriction of 14.5 stone :(

Is that a general weight restriction for all dropzones? suppose it's something to aim for :)

It's 15 stone at Langar in Nottingham. I think that in most places, they allow weights over that amount if the person is fit. The 15 stone limit isn't really for the parachute rig. It's intended for the landings. If you're 16 stone and out of shape, there's an increased risk of landing badly.

I've just received confirmation of my booking. I'll be doing a tandem jump next week :D

They've told me to wear trainers and loose fitting clothes. They've specifically said 'no jeans'. What do you guys wear when you jump? Surely it'll be too cold for a tracksuit.

Jeans will not offer any flexibility. :)

When I did some jumps in Sweden in the winter, I wore 2x thermals and tracksuit bottom!

In the UK a pair of trackies will be fine - you'll be wearing a jumpsuit anyway so you'll have another layer. It's over so quickly and your body will be screaming with emotions that you won't even notice the cold! :D

Enjoy it! :D

Are AFF courses the best way of doing it, if the money and time are available? Are there any companies you can recommend (UK or abroad)?

Edit :: by that I mean the full courses, where levels 1-8 are done.

AFF is the quickest way to do it. Check out my youtube channel to see an example of the levels;

www.youtube.com/ogettings

I started in 2009 but got ill and had to leave it. Managed to get my licence within a month when I took it up again last summer. :)

As for companies, I recommend target skysports because you can usually transfer between them and skydive spain even if you've not completed all your levels yet because they are owned by the same family.

And only £2000 (plus £30 for each jump once I'm licensed)! Bargain :p

I'd quite like to jump in a foreign country.

Just under if you get it first time;

Also, jump tickets can be as low as £15, it's just £30 if you need kit hire and packing. The more competent you get, you'll be able to pack your own rig (once you've bought one). :)

Skydiver here.

Not been able to jump since moving to London, but I used to jump at Langar. My signature picture is of me doing my first dive exit (with poor technique) with the legendary Milko on camera.

Nearly everyone's first dive exit is rubbish though. :p
The amount of time I caught my foot on the door of our tiny finnist G92 as I went out was ridiculous. haha.

Did it once in NZ from 15000 feet. £50!

I must say that I was being very sure of myself on the flight up, but when the guy I was strapped to told me to swing my feet over the side of the plane, I experienced real and deep fear for the first time in my life.

I was fine once I had jumped though.

I jumped from 12000 ft in NZ over Lake Taupo in the middle of the summer for just under £80 - lovely snow capped mountain in the distance and perfect blue skies. IIRC the exchange rate was $2.6 to the £1 at the time.

I was hanging out the plane as he held on to a metal rail and then did a few somersaults as we fell, then I felt better after that when just falling straight down.

** this was back in 2007 btw, not this summer.... exchange rates are bad now :(**

Thread resurrection time. Just done my first (tandem) skydive today at Headcorn in Kent from 12,000ft.

Amazing experience, on a perfect clear sunny day. You could see pretty much the whole of Kent from up there, and just about make out the coast of France.

Is it wrong that I didn't feel even the slightest bit nervous during the whole thing? I kept thinking 'the nerves will kick in any minute' but they didn't - wierd... :confused:

Anyway - if you've ever thought about doing it but 'ummed and ahhed' then go for it - it's an unforgettable experience.
