Golf 2.3 V5 2002 @ 27500 milage. Has got lots of goodies...

3 Doors, Automatic, Hatchback, Metallic black paintwork, Petrol, ABS, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Air conditioning, Alloy wheels, Computer, Driver airbag, Electric mirrors, Electric windows, Foglights, Front armrest, Folding rear seats, Immobiliser, Passenger airbag, Power assisted steering, Remote locking, Side airbags, Radio/CD Multichanger, Rear headrests, Sports seats, Traction control, Adjustable seats, CD, CD Multichanger, Electric sunroof, Full service history, Leather upholstery, Factory Radio Sat Navigation, Full Black Leather Heated Seats

Found it at local dealer for just under 8k - is this worth it?

It is an older model, but 27k milage is not bad going and it will have a lot of power.

I'd love to get the ST220 but it's outside my budget and the gf doesn't want me to get it! I'm strugging to think of anything else I'd prefer/target.

Gadgety/none standard for what you're looking at in italic, standard as you should expect in standard, WT-F in bold :)

Is it really all that when you look at it now? :p

No, it will have 170bhp. Thats not shabby but its not a 'lot of power'.

Hang on... you want an ST220? You can buy low mileage ST220's for less than this Golf, they are cheaper to run, about the same economy wise and noticeably quicker. Infact they are better in almost every way unless you are one of those who thinks VW is a posh badge.

There are numerous better cars for the money than this Golf. Take your pick:

Ford Mondeo ST220
RenaultSport Clio 182
Ford Focus ST170 (only just better, though)
Subaru Impreza Turbo
BMW 328Ci
BMW 330i Saloon
Honda Civic Type-R
Audi A4 3.0 Quattro Sport
Seat Leon Cupra/Cupra R
Audi S3

Seriously, that Golf is about the worst place to put £8k I can possibly think of. Who gives a stuff about the mileage?

Took me a few reads to understand that, but I see now;)

I really don't know. I have liked Golf's for a long time now, maybe thats why I'm eyeing it, but I;m badly in need of advice when working out whether the cost is right for the car

If you absolutely must have a Golf (And honestly I think the only Golf Mk4 that's actually worth buying is the R32 and it carries a ridiculously silly price premium) buy a cheaper one. Thats just daft money.

Not after a Golf only. Your list has really helped, as I'm open to all suggestions atm.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Golfs but I happen to think they are THE single most over-rated cars on the market today. Half the country seems to think they are amazing ultra reliable super-duper prestigious wonder hatchbacks.

Unfortunately, these people affect the market and as such, Golfs are expensive to buy.

In reality, they are simply better built Focus rivals which don't handle as well.

If the Golf was priced reasonably with the Focus on the used market I'd not have much to say against them.

This could be interesting if taken the wrong way (which i hope it doesn't) but here goes...

I want to know why [TW]Fox hates the golf so much?
Yes some are overpriced like the one in the first post but there are some good buys out there. The rest are overpriced for a reason, and no its down to them being prestigious or thinking they have a posh badge its the simple fact that they are good reliable cars but recommening a ford over one of these for similar money is just silly.

Saying that, i think bmw are the most over-rated/priced cars on the market considering what mercedes & audi have to offer for similar price tags ;)

As a 2.3 auto it will drink fuel, and a the current price of petrol this may account for the good price.
Yes they are more expensive to buy but they are also more likely to hold that premium over other cars when it comes to selling.

My other half thought that and bought a brand new Golf and the gearbox destroyed itself after just 35,000 miles leaving her with a huge bill (warranty had just run out). There is a whole website about other gearboxes doing exactly the same thing - the final drive on particular models was rivetted to the diff and the rivets fail. Of course VW deny there was ever an issue, but decided to start using bolts instead of rivets anyway.

Also, it felt so cheap inside and rattly compared to a 'proper' premium brand.
