Cambelt change

It would all depend on the car I would have thought.
If I remember correctly, when I had the belt changed on my Octy vRS at 60k miles:

60k Service
Cambelt
Waterpump

I think the whole lot came in around £500 - but that was main dealership. Specialist would be cheaper.
Also if the car is "nothing clever" any garage would be able to do it.

Well, my local AA approved Halfords Autocentre (used to be called Nationwide Autocentre) and who did my clutch last year, were going to charge £310 for the cambelt. My mobile mechanic did it today for £189 which I think is pretty decent. 307 HDi on 89k.

Octavia 1.9 tdi 110BHP cost me £275 for cambelt kit (tensioners and whatnot are important) plus water pump back in April. Most quotes came in over £350. Rang a main dealer for the laugh and they came back with £550.

Invoice for this 2005 vectra i have here shows £222inc VAT for the cambelt and waterpump to be changed at a local garage (seems like OEM waterpump but a Continental cambelt kit).

This. My ZS180 costs anywhere between £500 and £1200 according to various people that have been quoted. It's a pretty nasty job that took me most of a day.

OTOH I changed the belt and tensioners on my wife's Hyundai Coupe in a couple of hours, it was a piece of cake. I wouldn't expect a typical garage (i.e. not a dealer) to charge much more than £100+parts in that case.

Having taken a look at my mechanic at work on that set of cogs while I brought him a cup of tea, I'd say you're a brave man, and well done. :)

Its very easy in principal. The problems generally come from what you've got to remove to get to the belt and getting the correct tools for timing it all up again :).

Where they genuine VAG parts? Otherwise that seems expensive as a complete aftermarket timing belt kit with tensioners and waterpump is about £100+vat.

Yep all genuine inc VAT.

Labour charges for cambelts are much higher on the 110bhp (non-PD) than the later PDs as it's a more involved job.

I'd expect about £175 inc on a PD engine.

If possible can people please post the cost breakdown for the parts and labor separately? I ask as the 'mate's rates' prices I've been quoted in the past on VAG cars is considerably cheaper than some of the prices being thrown around in here.

I know, I know, no directly comparable to fully warrantied worked at a dealer/specialist, but still :).

They are def a DIY job, just be methodcal and rotate the egine by hand before attempting to start. Just done my sisters Focus.
With the prices above think I'll start a sideline.....

 Totally Crazy Prices in here

Done a few my cars myself

Normally costs me around £100 to do them...
about £65 for a cam belt kit
And about £35 for a water pump
And a few spare hours to fit

It was £350 for the VW Golf GTI (MK5) but being done at a Dealership they didn't change the water pump and didn't advise it was a good idea at the time. So now I am at 80k and it seems like the water pump needs replacing :-(
