hi i have a jvc c amcorder that takes the mini dv cassettes

i use firewire to take the videos off the camera and using sony video capture to take them off, thing is it keeps having dropped frames every 5 minutes and its really doing my head in because i cant work out why its doing it..

any ideas?

Theres lots of things to take into consideration when capturing footage from camcorder .What's the processing speed of your PC ?? .How much RAM has it got ?? Have you De-fragged your PC recently ?? Are you running a Anti-virus program ??.All of these things can affect the outcome .I have two standalone PC's for video editing with no internet connection ,no anti-virus or spyware programs running ,I capture from Sharp & Panasonic camcorders using Pinnacle 9 and have no dropped frames using Firewire .There may be something running on your PC interupting data flow causing your PC to lag .Come back with your PC specs.

What software are you using to capture?

I don't know what NLE program you use but there is nothing wrong with Moviemaker 2.0 to capture live vid from your cam as you're not after the editing/ transitions; you're simply streaming raw dv to you HDDs. Moviemaker doesn't compress dv so it's as good as AVID for capturing.

Moviemaker is an XP accessory. Make sure you download the latest version.
Give your students five minutes to show them how to hit "Start Capture" and "End Capture" and movie maker will stream the footage to HDD with a time and date stamp file name.
