Hi Guys,

I recently bought a panasonic camcorder out in the states, its ntsc

When I record footage its recorded in colour, however when I connect the camcorder my tele at home , my girlfriends house or my mums house the image on the tele is always black and white...why is this?

Is it because of the NTSC - Pal issue?

If yes, then I found a converter, which clearly states "tele must be 60hz compliant" in order for the converter - any converter to work....whats that about..

please help

thanks in advance

cheers!!

Your TV needs to support 60hz, which is a higher frequency refresh rate.
This is part of the NTSC standard. The PAL standard is 50hz.

The black and white issue is usually solved by using the convertor, but sometimes on rare occasions it is caused by fault cables/connectors.

WIKI says:-
The NTSC format is used with the M format (see broadcast television systems), which consists of 29.97 interlaced frames of video per second. Each frame consists of 484 lines out of a total of 525 (the rest are used for sync, vertical retrace, and other data such as captioning). PAL uses 625 lines, and so has a better picture quality. The NTSC system interlaces its scanlines, drawing odd-numbered scanlines in odd-numbered fields and even-numbered scanlines in even-numbered fields, yielding a nearly flicker-free image at its approximately 59.94 hertz (nominally 60 Hz/100.1%) refresh frequency. The refresh compares favorably to the 50 Hz refresh rate of the PAL and SECAM video formats used in Europe, where 50 Hz alternating current is the standard; flicker was more likely to be noticed when using these standards until modern PAL TV sets began using 100 Hz refresh rate to eliminate flicker. This produces a far more stable picture than native NTSC and PAL had, effectively displaying each frame twice. This did, at first, cause some motion problems, so it was not universally adopted until a few years ago. Interlacing the picture does complicate editing video, but this is true of all interlaced video formats, including PAL and SECAM.

thanks for your detailed explanation and your expert googling skills :)

as you say the PAL standard refresh rate is 50hz therefore will the converter work if my tv only supports up to a maximum of 50hz??

How will I figure out what refresh rate my tv supports? I don't think I have the manual, I guess google will tell me? I guess thats the road to go down for me before I purchase any converter as they all clearly state the tv has to be 60hz compliant...however if all PAL tvs are 50hz then surely I am stuffed??

am I right in my assumption?

please help

thanks in advance...

I do believe most TVs can take up to 60Hz no problem....I seem to remember from my ps2 days, I had a game or 2 that you had to set the Hz before you played and 60Hz always worked fine for me :)

sorry seems like ive misunderstood....

here it is again...

when recording on the camcorder the lcd shows colour display, when hooked up to my tele which is a panasonic tx28pk2 the tv also shows the recorded footage in colour HOWEVER:

when recording from the camcorder via the tele onto a dvd r or onto a video cassette it records in black and white despite the television and the camcorder showing colour images of the recorded footage...

any ideas why this maybe? is it because of the 50hz refresh rate? or is it because of the settings on my tele?

please please help

thanks in advance guys...

cheers!!
