We are looking for a camera that is a good all rounder that can be used for general shots/family shots/holidays/motor racing shots but most importantly takes pictures instantly as we are expecting our first baby soon so dont want to miss a great shot because of a slow camera.

From what I have read the Sony NEX 3NL or NEX 6 seem to fit the bill, although this is my first camera so a friend suggested a bridge camera like the HX300 or HX400 might be a better fit?

Appreciate any input or suggestion on other models (Budget max £450). Thanks :)

I'm starting to feel like a horrible, horrible fanboy, but... E-PL5?

Twin lens kit for £399 should see you good for most of the stuff on your list, and if you can invest a small amount extra down the line then one of the cheaper primes would do well for indoor baby photos.

hi, im no expert at all but i had simila needs to you, i bought a nikon D5200 for these reasons: general shots/holidays/motor racing shots
im still getting used to it but im getting good results from it.
from playing with it the last few days i think i need something in the 200mm / 300mm range for motor sport but the rest is ok. il have a thread going shortly with my shots for you to take a look at and im i tottal baginner. but the 5200was £370 so for your left of budget you could get a lens.

Depends how you feel about size/weight.

If you don't mind something a bit bigger and heavier then go for a DSLR. All current DSLRs are very good, Nikon D5100 should fit the bill.

If you want something smaller, jacket pocket sized then a compact systems camera/mirrorless is the way to go. Like King4aDay, the EPL5 is one of the best choices out there.

I would avoid any bridge camera u less you are really sure you know what you are getting into (poor image quality in a bigger body but big zoom range). Hi end compacts will fair much better, Panasonic lx7, Sony RX100, Canon S110 etc.

Bridge cameras are mostly a marketing ploy, they don't at all bridge the gap between compact and DSLRs, for the most part they are worse than compacts.

Thanks for input so far, EPL5 seems to get good reviews also...will need to research further. However where can you find it for £399 with the twin lenses? As that seems a very good price! I assume they aren't a compeititor to OcUK as OcUK don't sell it :-)

The D5100/D5200 get good reviews but maybe a little too bulky which is why I hadn't looked at DSLRs. We already have a whole load of "stuff" for the baby so something the size of the NEX 3/6 or EPL5 is better for us.

Thanks D.P. that confirms what I had read about the bridge cameras. The RX100 sounds good but the optical zoom seemed low so didn't think it would be a good all rounder.
