The answer is probably no because it's quite cheeky, but does anyone know of any companies that will rent you a camera and then at the end of the rental if you decide you like it you can buy it off of them and have the rental amount discounted from the total?

I know of one and it's the only Official Olympus rental in the UK.
I would think it's no use for you as you're probably in the Canon/Nikon camp? If you're undecided, you can give Olympus a try
This rental group is run by the admin of E-System Talk UK. There's a variety of lenses for rent and a couple of different bodies (E620 and E30), any rented items can be sold to you with the rental price discounted from your purchase off ANY official Olympus retailer (online or highstreet) - all direct with Olympus.

These guys let you hire cameras, but they don't seem to advertise a 'Try before you buy' type deal. Might be worth contacting them though.

I was bought a voucher for christmas to hire a lens from 'Jacobs Digital'; they seemed pretty cheap compared to others I had looked at. There is one on Whiteladies Road too? May be worth having a chat with them in person?
I've got one in Hull.
