Im in the process of looking at my options for a camera upgrade sometime in the new year.

Currently have a Minolta Dimage A1 digital camera, and am currently waying up the options of the following:

Nikon D80
Canon EOS 400D
Canon EOS 30D

These all appear to be in and around the same price bracket, for the bodys anyway. Kinda leaning towards the Nikon D80 at the moment though.

Would welcome other peoples views, comments, suggestions etc

Well first of all, as you're not in a rush, go down to your local mess ups and waste some of their time seeing which one's you like the feel of first.

Only after that start getting mixed up in the different technical details. :)

Just currently looking through the online reviews at the moment, and just trying to get an idea as to which cameras i should be looking at really.

Well you are looking at a good selection there for sure. :)

But it will become important to check how they handle with the sort of lenses you will inevitably end up buying.

Oh definately!

Lenses are were it gets expensive though lol

Want a nice zoom lense (for close up sports pics & wildlife shots, everday kinda lense (family pics etc), and a nice macro lense for close up work.

Possibly the following:

Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm (F3.5-4.5 G IF ED DX ) - for everyday kinda shots

And then either the following for zoom stuff

AF-S DX 18-135mm (F3.5-5.6 G IF ED DX)
or
AF-S DX VR 18-200mm (F3.5-5.6 G IF ED DX)

Low end Canon and Nikon cameras are pretty much the same with just a few minor differences.
Canon images show less noise/grain and Nikon cameras tend to have better build quality.
Go down to your local camera shop and try them out - There is no point buying a camera that is uncomfortable to hold.

Also look at the lenses on offer, Canon lenses have 3 sectors; low, mid and high where as Nikon only really have two; low and high, so it soon gets very expensive. You could have course look at Sigma or Tamron lenses where there are great bargains to be had as well.

I'd have to say there's not much between the 400D and the D80. All down to personal preference, and which system you want to buy into.

I prefer the Nikons, because they are slightly larger than the Canons, they are actually easier to hold (in my experience). Go down your local camera gaff, and have a play with them, see what you prefer.

Canon 30D without doubt.

He speaketh the truth(eth?) :p

The 30D is so good it's untrue. It's so easy to access settings while you're on the move it's great. Much easier than the cheaper cameras. It feels like you could drop a car on it too :D

I'm over the moon happy with mine. Shame I've not got time to use it at the moment. My most recent photo was of a cyberman toy :D
