Hey all.

I was just wondering, cus you know.. interested.

The Police Camera speed vans, do they still function and catch you whilst they are on the move?

For example, your driving past them and their are driving towards you... Can they still capture your speed?

I am under the impression that they need to be stationary so they they can set up reference points and the vectors will be correct.

Any helpful insight will be appreciated.. cus of they can... Yea...

The camera vans only work when stationary.

Traffic cars have some (very old) kit that allows them to measure speed (a simple 'speed = distance / time' counter that can be turned on and off), along with a calibrated speedo and a video camera to record whats's going on. Your average police car won't have anything like this though.

Traffic police cars are fitted with the Provida system, which is hugely accurate and is being constantly updated, so is not "very old" .

The latest ProVida system now records MPEG4/H.264 quality video footage, with front and optional rear facing cameras, overlaid with patrol car speed and a fully automatic radar speed measurement of target vehicles, in front or behind the police vehicle.
Using the radar sensing capability, the unit records the speed and footage of vehicles driving in either direction.

The system can also be fitted to Police motorcycles.

The traffic cars you have been in must be better than the ones I've sat in then, we have some right old kit in some of ours :p
