Hi all. After a bit of advice. Just been down to see my dad, and someone has keyed his car. Right down one side, and a chunk out the bonnet too. This is the first time it's happened to this car (06 Passat) but he's only had it a month or so. His last car, was keyed badly. Clearly someone feels he has wronged him, but no idea who.

Anyway, each time this has happened it has been reported to the police and as far as we can tell it was only happening when the car was parked on the road outside the house. BUT the Passat has been damaged whilst parked on the driveway now.

It's not on, and he wants to find out who is doing it - so the name can be passed to the police, no-one is going to go bash their head in with a keyboard or anything.

What quality / kind of camera is needed to give the police a decent chance of being able to see this scrote-bags face. He's asked me to look into this. I was thinking of putting a camera on the sidewall of the house, covering the car. Is it worth / possible getting a camera inside the car ?

What about an alarm with microwave / proximity sensors. Are they easy to add to a car like the Passat. I know they're annoying, but if the car is on the drive then no-one has any business being near the thing!

So thats that really, after some advice. Any ideas?

they are probably covering their faces if doing it on the drive.
don't waste your money with a camera.
lights are good as a deterent, but if they want to cause damage you wont stop them.

that's why i was thinking an alarm that goes MEEEEEEP if someone gets close to the car, used to be one down the road from me - but it was parked on the street, if you walked slowly past it it would go MEEEEEEP

i think a camera mounted on the house, aimed so it covers the car and the street - if it is good enough, would probably get them before they thought to cover their face.

Keep the camera out of sight, or rather camouflaged somehow perhaps. Dress it up as a pigeon.

just to folow this up.

bought a DVR CCTV recorder, 4 channel input, 25fps recording rate, network interface too. couple of 1/3" sony cameras with IR leds around the outside, some cable, some plugs and now have this watching the drive.

total cost ~£150, which was less than it cost to have the damage on the car repaired last time. the cameras work fine at night and emit a faint red glow.

was chatting to my dads neighbour earlier, and we're looking at mounting a wireless camera on the edge of his house, watching both drives and linking that into the recorder.

sorry to jump on your thread but ...
could you please email me (address in trust) some details, where from etc on that setup as Im looking for something similar for when I get my new motor.

I hope you have signage up stating that your property is covered by CCTV. If not, the police won't be able to use the video even if the person is clearly visible and can be identified.
I learnt this the hard way after setting up a camera on my car and trying to get the police to look at the subsequently captured footage of a scrote kicking my wing mirror off. They asked about the signs and when I told them there were no signs they wouldn't even look at the video.

sounds like you were fobbed off, as it's not a place of work, or a public place then there is no need for signage - we're not trying to catch out anyone who is legitamitely there.

macca672 - i'll drop you an email later on

Sounds exactly what I need (have local kids trespassing, smashing random rubbish and stuff against my driveway when we're away, ripping pickets out of my fences and last weekend we caught them weeing in our front garden in a dare bet type of contest, the parents of course don't believe any of it is done by their angels). Where did you buy the kit for £150 if you don't mind me asking?

not sure what that tots up to, it was all bought about a week after i started this thread - so prices may have changed somewhat since.

the whole lot wasn't bought as a kit, i just bought what i thought was needed. of course your install might need different kit, wireless cameras for example if you can't run the coax where you need to.

can i ask if this kit records sound ? im having issues with next neighbours dogs barking in the garden 5am most mornings, so would like a cctv with is triggered by sound and motion, would this kit do that ?

Anyone have an idea about the alarm solution then that gives a beep if you're near it, same problem here but we have no idea where it happens, if it's at home or at work or elsewhere... Started with someone making small scratches randomly but recently he scratched the whole side :(.

make sure it has night vision and you need a sign saying that there is a camera in use so you can use the footage for evidence. Make sure that the sign is visible and in your garden. Hopefully the person doing this to your dads car wont see it and their face will be on the camera.

I know this cause y gfs parents have had the same problem so they stock up a CCTV and the person got caught. He got solicitors involved and they tried to play theres no sign card but unlucky for them it was below the camera and is a nice colour to stand out

bloke on the VXR forums has 4 wireless cameras hooked up in VXR8.

They are actually inside the car and point to front, back and the 2 side windows. He's also had the glass secuity laminated so that it can withstand even the most brutal of brick attacks. The cameras are wireless and have rechargable batteries that last for a week or so i think he said. He just has 2 sets of batteries that he swaps round when he washes the car on a weekend. All hooked up to a recorder in the boot.

Not cheap mind, but means that anybody looking in the window or whatever has the face caught full frame on CCTV.
