cameras to catch vandals / alarm to deter them?

It's all pointless because when you do catch them, they only get ordered to pay a paltry sum which doesn't cover the cost of the damage they caused.

bloke on the VXR forums has 4 wireless cameras hooked up in VXR8.

They are actually inside the car and point to front, back and the 2 side windows. He's also had the glass secuity laminated so that it can withstand even the most brutal of brick attacks. The cameras are wireless and have rechargable batteries that last for a week or so i think he said. He just has 2 sets of batteries that he swaps round when he washes the car on a weekend. All hooked up to a recorder in the boot.

Not cheap mind, but means that anybody looking in the window or whatever has the face caught full frame on CCTV.

Could he not just wire into the car battery?

That's a nice setup for the price!

I just have a proximity sensor on mine and I only turn it on at night when it's on the drive, so if it goes off someone or something is near the car.

Whats the qual like at night? I can see on the screen during the day it looks pretty good but what about a night?

I have been tempted to do a similar setup. Does it record 24/7? Do you have a link to it?

not that great tbh. are looking at alternative cameras atm to improve night vision.

anyone any suggestions on better night vision cameras?

Wouldn't it be better to simply hook up a floodlight to a proximity sensor to illuminate the whole drive if someone gets close? Would probably solve the vandalism issue at the same time.

no it wouldn't. apart from some drunkard hitting the car with a plant and doing no damage, the car has not been touched since the cameras went up. Fitting a floodlight that lights up half the street whenever a cat walks by will just get on everyones ****.

possibly, but as the cameras auto switch then they might get a confused.. need to try it out.

also thinking of an IR floodlight, then at least the cameras can (hopefully) drop the ISO and be a little less noisy.

I'm seriously considering getting that DVR, however that model seems a bit tricky to get hold of. The only one that is now on eBay is the PDR-400 which doesn't have the network connector.

With your DVR (the PDR-400IP) although you can watch live video over the network, can you play back recorded video, as this is currently my main way of accessing the CCTV?

The best cameras to use generally are black and white high sensitivity, high resolution, and coupled with infra-red illumination.

Good manufacturers (those that I deal with at work at least) are Watec and LCL. Both make some very good cameras and have decent quality lenses available from many manufacturers, some of which are quite reasonable. They use a standard 1" x 32TPI camera mount thread, which is pretty much the industry standard.

I mentioned Watec and LCL above, but they are quite expensive. There are probably many other 1" x 32TPI high-res cameras available at a lower price. 99% of cheap all-in-one packages have crap lenses and/or crap cameras with poor sensitivity sensors or poor noise handling.

Your best bet is to have a setup that basically has the car filling the picture with little space around it in view. The resolution of most cameras is not high enough to identify a person in a wide field of view.
