Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone owns a camper van, restored one, converted a van in to one or even built one from the ground up?

Care to share stories, photos etc?

Looking at getting one, a VW to go alongside the Corrado but the costs/reliability are always an issue. Tempted just to get a T5 and convert it, so would like to hear your stories and experiences :)

A friend owns a t4, I've questioned him on t5's a few times and he is of the opinion that they are more trouble than they are worth. Not worth spending your money on.

Bloke downstairs did a T4 conversion. You can buy pretty much everything off the shelf to convert a VW van into a camper. I think he got a window put into the side door, the bed and stuff is a kit that is spring loaded and folds up inside and he recently got a pop-up roof put on it.

I've had a VWT4 2.5TDI, it was brilliant. Reliable, cheap to run, strong engine, actually quite quick (in van terms) and looked really nice.

I also had a T5 but only for a month or so (would have kept it but sold due to moving abroad) and I think they're cracking too, I would still prefer a T4 over the T5 but T4's are really holding their money so it would be a T5 for me again now.

As with all these things the sky is the limit, depends how far you want to take the conversion, personally I like the day van type approach which for me at least was all I really needed, insulated, leisure battery with basic lighting and electrics, cooker and a nice comfy place to get your head down.

I have a friend who has a T4 with the whole shabang, diesel night heater, hot water etc.

Do it, great fun, nice to have a moving toy chest :D I'm going to run my current car until it dies then get back on the van hunt.
