I've spotted some Toda cams (+ springs) for sale - rare to get ones come up 2nd hand and rarer to get ones where the seller is asking £300 less than what they're worth.

This is a pic of them. At first I thought they were badly scored but I think it's just the reflection. They actually seem ok but crappy pic tbh.

Really suspicious of the price for these - the guy said they are out of his brothers DC5 which he put backwards into a telegraph pole. He said they've only done 2,000 miles - so I'll add 10,000 onto that to get the true mileage.

I'm not risking sending this guy any money - suggested cash on collection which he seems ok with.

I know the pic is pretty rubbish but can anyone notice anything obviously wrong with them? I can't. Cam gears are still attached, which I guess is no big deal - do they remove easily enough if I need to get them off?

Last things - is fitted cams a huge job or not? I'll need an uprated chain tensioner (£100), is the tensioner a big job?

Ta.

Physically installing cams is relatively straightforward, no more complicated than doing a head gasket. Biggest thing is the cost of RR time to get the the car set up properly.

Agree in principle, but state that due to limited viewing angles in photos, you will want to inspect them properly in person, and will make a final decision there and then once inspected.

That way you're showing interest, but not holding yourself to a decision you really need to make in person :)

Yeah I was thinking of doing them myself, the car runs mega rich (for cooling) so I could easily cruise up the motorway to get it mapped. That'll save me about £300.

Worried about the tensioner - if it's low down & I need to get the car on ramps mid installation etc - going to be a right pita.

Got the cams and uprated valve springs today. Look like new.

Next stop 265/270 bhp. :D.
265/270BHP :D:D:D

Was good to see you again a few days back, you must have been thinking who the when I rolled up next to you.

This is tempting me even more to chuck a few quid at the Clio, it's not cheap but can get an SMT6 ecu thingy, inlet work and cams for an average sum that takes the mid range up loads and ups top end a little. Very tempting.

what kinda effect does it have on the driveability?

Uber Lumpy idle and reduced low down torque. Mid range and Top end though will be something special. Might make the car rather annoying to drive around town in, but great on the open road / track, and nothing a compression alteration couldn't help.

Glad they are as described Merlin. You occassionally do get some genuine sellers with genuine goods and genuine reasons for sale!

Whats the profile / duration?

No, these are vtec cams remember so the "everyday lobes" are profiled only a tiny little bit more aggressive than the lobes on the stock cams.

The mid lobes you can see in the pic are the vtec ones - it's those that are significantly more aggressive.

So, < vtec - it'll drive much the same, maybe a bit more torque, and when vtec engages it'll be pretty mental.

Teehee, I want some..............need a DC5 first tho!

Are you going to have a pop at fitting them yourself then?

Not sure atm, I need to think it through and investigate some things like head skimming (whether I need to do this) etc etc.

There won't be any traction problems in the dry, but when it's wet - there will be no vtec. :o

Have a go yourself Merlin. I fitted Cams to my MK4 Astra a few years back and was surpried how easy it was. As has been said, its the set up afterwards that makes the difference.

Also worth noting, longer duration cams lower the compression ratio when fitted, so raising it as a ratio value back to standard (or higher) at the same time will improve the performace further throughout the rev range.

I thought you had Regal do it all along with the Dbilas Throttle Bodies and remap when they put your car in total vauxhall?

Gonna be awesome mate

But I'm stunned that you are going to fit them yourself, you never, ever get your hads dirty with mods

I know, I really dont want to do them, but if I dont do them - I lose the car for two days, which means hiring a car for work etc etc. Right pita. If I can get them plonked in and limp the car up to Warrington - I'll not have to part with it at all.
