Can a 300D do infra-red?

It should be able to do it in the way any DSLR can, just slap on a R72 and shoot away. One problem might be that the kit lens reportedly has a hot spot but I cant think of anything else.

Yeah, the 300D can do IR - but an "older" cam like, say a 10D would be better at it.

All digicams are sensitive to IR - but the manufacturers don't want this, as it produces dodgy glow and the such in your pics. So they pop a filter infront of the sensor to block out IR light. That's all very fine and dandy, unless you want to shoot IR. Newer SLR's are getting better and better at blocking out the IR - which makes it harder and harder to shoot it. The D70 is very good for IR - the D200 is not.

But yeah, the short answer is yes, you can shoot IR :)
Just be sure to have a tripod, and use the least dense of the IR filters (Hoya R72 // Wratten 89B)

Having seen some of the IR shots on display on these forums, I'm interested in having a go at this. Will my 20D be suitable or is the IR blocking by the camera too effective?

20D can do IR as-is :)

All dSLR's can - just some are better at it than others. Sometimes you just need longer exposures.

But yeah, as I say above - I'd stick to the Hoya R72 // Wratten 89B filter for the "less sensitive" cams. I think an 87 would be pushing it, and certainly an 87C

Excellent, thanks. I think that I'm going to buy an EF 50mm 1.8 and an IR filter to give this a whirl.

Anyone got any good links for IR technique? Thanks

Tried the 50mm?

Yep, along with the 28-105, 70-200 and even the 100-400. :( There's mixed reports on the 20D's some get great results and others seem to be like mine. I miss the 10D for that.

 Thats a tad annoying. Wonder how the the 30D will fair.

Worse for IR photography, I think. Canon seem to be getting more adept at cutting out these wavelengths with each new range of cameras. Maybe they will release a 30Da, but I doubt it - the 20Da can't have sold in huge numbers

Not very well though, or at least mine isn't. I've tried different lenses, different filters and still haven't had anything approaching acceptable.
Ive said this for a long time now. The 10D is the best one for IR. The 20s got a real stubborn filter that requires such long exposures. Its not even worth trying unless the sun is blazing. 50mm F1.8 has been the best to use but its not got a wide enough field for what I enjoy

Gotta admit that I was disapointed when the 20D came out a month after buying my 10D, however I do love doing IR and I am very glad that my 10D has produced some stunning shots.

Don't suppose anyone knows of any lists of cameras that are suitable for infra red photography? I was thinking of upgrading from the s5500, and it's something i'm interested in, and obviously don't want to ruin all chances of doing it. Also has anyone tried this with the fuji s5500 (my current camera)? Would be interested if this is suitable. Thanks :)

Nikon D70. It produces wonderful Infra Red shots

Yeah, dunno if you've seen any of my IR stuff mate, but I use a D70 for it all.

Out of the current dSLR's it's probably the best for IR without modification :)
I think I've seen a bit. I've seen ST8's and it looks very nice.
