Can a cisgendered actor play a trans character?

Google it.

Also some of my trans friends are actually quite... Good looking. Unlike that person above...

I feel odd saying it because I remember when they were guys. :p

When I was a teenager, my next door neighbour's son had a sex change.

She is fit, and has worked very successfully as a female model.

It's a thread about actors portraying various roles, based on their sex?

The title might be, but the OP makes it pretty clear the film issue is a jumping off point about trans/gender issues. Which is also the course the thread has generally taken.

There was a fuss, whether you picked up on it or not.

Fair enough I was not aware, point being get the best actor for the job not becuse they fit a demographic or characters orientation. That goes for Race/Gender/oriention etc.

Should I bother that the Starbuck was woman and not a man in the BSG reboot, no

Should I be bother Zachary Quinto a gay man plays a straight character in Heroes or Star trek, No

Would I be bothered if say Idris Elba portrayed Winston Churchill in something ? No infarct i think it would be awesome :D

Any actor worth there ilk would make you forget these things within a few minutes imo.

I do have a friend who has just started on the path to become a She from a he, i have to ask her about it. Something tells me she wouldn't care as well.

99.99% of the time, male roles are played by male actors. Subverting the gender of the actor can be a fun twist because it happens so rarely.

How many trans roles are played by trans actors? 20%? 10%? The only mainstream role that comes to mind is Laverne Cox in Orange Is The New Black. As I said before in the thread, if this was a one off then there wouldn't be such a backlash. Unfortunately it's part of an ongoing trend though.

If 80% of male roles were played by female actors there would be riots in the streets.

How many trans people are there in acting schools? I'm sure there are *some* which is why you do get a few roles played by them but there is a much, much smaller pool of people to chose from.

Say you want to pick a talented individual for a lead role that could potentially make or break an investment of millions yet you decide to narrow down the selection pool to a tiny number of mediocre/unpredictable actors because of 'social justice', the feelings of a small group of people online. It is incredibly risky and unnecessary as the actor just needs to be physically male.

What next - only cast autistic actors in autistic roles, forget Dustin Hoffman, why not source some random mediocre actor from a community theater - the producers and investors will love that.

Fact is these things are commercial ventures, there is nothing stopping SJWs and trans people from making their own films with casting centered around identity politics rather than commercial viability and talent. They'll probably not be a commercial success but they're choosing to ignore sensible commercial decisions in the first place.
