Can a get a decent 6.1 A/V Receiver for < £250

Make sure you buy one with preouts if you want to run some decent music through the system. I bought an avr1911 and now need to get a new receiver just for some preouts as musically, av receivers are DOG POOP.

I am looking at getting that amp with a set of Monitor Audio MASS speakers. what do you think of the amp? Are you pleased?

Yeah well pleased with it, can't fault it.

YPAO mic really helps get you on the right track, still early days and still fine tuning it, blu rays are immense!! Yamaha 2 year warranty also!

Cambridge Audio Azur 640 and arcam are supposed to be quite good.

The Cambridge Audio Azur 640R was a pleasure to measure, as it consistently delivered expected behavior and declined to snap fuses, smoke circuit boards, or require resetting, despite the usual abuse. Better still, it also set new receiver benchmarks on test after test: perfect (yes, perfect!) scores for PCM-stereo linearity at -90 dB and real-world (dithered) signal-to-noise ratio (plus superb 96-kHz/24-bit S/N), best-ever excess-noise figures, and stereo output power that could probably sneak by on a "150 watts x 2" model. Multichannel Dolby Digital results were just as fine, and the Azur 640R did indeed deliver its full rated power with five channels driven before clipping - and very nearly did so with seven channels stressed. It's quite nice, once in a while, to have test-bench results (acquired, as always, after listening/writing is complete) coincide so well with listening opinions, reconfirming that maybe one really can hear a difference now and then.

There ok but still someway off a dedicated stereo amp. I only bought the Arcam av280 because I was trying to get as musical an av amp as I could do without spending silly money. I picked up the Arcam for £400 brand new in a January sale afew years ago. It was just as all the new HD codecs came out which it doesn't support hence why a new £1300 amp was going for £400. Even still it doesn't hold a candle to my old stero amp for music. A £600 Roksan Kandy Liii.

Would love an Arcam AVR-600 it's just a shame there £3,000

You are not going to get a new amp with pre-outs for sub £300. You need to be looking at £600 and above for that.

Of course you can buy an AV amp for £250 that has a LOT of functionality.
Only question is whether it actually sounds good....

Ok, so after christmas I can up the budget to £300. Now after looking at the specs of the Onkyo mentioned earlier the dual HDMI output is a feature I could really use and in general the functionality for the price looks excellent value. However it seems there are some doubts over the general reliability of it.
So next question is, are there any other options at that price point that offer those functions, the dual HDMI out especially.
In terms of sound quality obviously I want it to be good but I'm no serious audiophile. This setup is for my family living room, not a dedicated home cinema and most of it's use will be simply for watching TV (Virgin TiVo box), playing dvds and blu-rays from a PS3 and listening to streamed MP3's.

Thanks for any advice,
Ross
