I'm travelling out to korea for quite a while soon and my work laptop has just been rebuilt with some of the most draconian restrictions I have ever seen. so i nee to look into getting my own persoenl machine to do "my stuff" on.

Can a netbook do the following things well? Any suggestions on which one to get?

1) Be used as a media server using Windows media player.

2) Be used as a download box for torrents/FTP.

3) Be used to share a internet conection. (Hotel web connections need to be "signed upto" on a web page everyday)

3a) Do any have the capability of having 2 wired conections).

4) Output to a HDTV using hdmi or VGA.

1) yes

2) yes

3) yes

3a) nope. However you do have wifi and ethernet.

4) only Ion-based platforms. Standard GMA netbooks do not support hdmi. Ion also means shorter battery life.

I'd get a acer 3810TZ trimeline, Asus UL30A or something similar. Around £500.

3a) If the netbook has a pcmcia slot, you can still get pcmcia RJ45 network cards.
They are nowhere near as prevalent as they were 10 years ago, but they are still available.

Do those dongles need drivers etc? anybody know one that workls with vista or windows7

Most netbooks dont have pcmcia slots yes?

One guy at works uses a USB to RJ45 dongle. I remember the company name was Startech. It required drivers to be installed and works in Vista and 7.:)

3) If you are going to be using Windows 7 on the netbook you can share hotel wifi using this program to make it really easy: http://www.connectify.me/index.html

3a) Like others have said you can get a USB Network adapter.

4) My eee 901 netbook has a vga out which has no problems outputting to a HDTV. However it can't play HD quality videos as the processor can't really handle it, you'd have to play SD unless you get an ION based one.
