Can a switched on empty mains socket use power?

Isn't atmospheric pressure like a 1000mbar? Probably need to multiply the numbers by 100.

As i said, my memory is awful, but i think that those were the figures above atmospheric pressure. i.e. if the pressure that day was 1011mbar, then the initial pressure in the pipe would be 1036mbar. Or perhaps the meter was reading 1025mbar to start with...

I do know that the pressure in the gas pipes is very very low, because he also told me that since i had soldered all my water pipes and they were ok, then my gas pipes would certainly be ok, because you can put flux on the fittings, push them together, and then not solder them, and the pressure of the gas will not be high enough to push the fitting apart! :o

Ah ok, that makes sense.

Plenty of 'true engineers' who are idiots, we had one in here last week.

its true my sky engineer was an idiot caused a huge electricity leakage we are still wiping it up more than 1 week later.

Just wish i lived in the UK where the sockets had rectangle holes instead of round ones as we all know things flow better in round holes.

Makes sense don't it?

LOL, electricity is so liquid right now

Yes, OP, the socket can use power. You just need to plug something in first.

Heh engineer... 'Fitter'.
If they're a bit more knowledgable they can have 'technician'

And this is why the UK needs to protect the term engineer so such idiots don't devalue true engineers.
If my class is anything to go by some true engineers are idiots.

Sounds like a funny story. Tell me more.

My girlfriend insists on turning everything off at the mains before leaving the flat (except the fridge) due to her paranoia about something shorting and starting a fire.

She says this stems from watching the scene in Fight Club where his flat blows up due to the pilot light in the boiler blowing out, the flat filling with gas and the compressor in the fridge flicking on and igniting the gas.

She doesn't like it when I point out the one thing we leave switched on is the fridge which is next to the boiler. :D
You only have to worry about that if your boiler is an old one that still needs a pilot.

But that aside she has every right to be worried. My parents were sleeping and I was still up reading. I suddenly hear *fubz*. By the time I get to my parents room across the hall trying to find out what made that noise there's already smoke pouring out of the room. TV on standby caught on fire.
