Can a triple channel system; can it run in single channel?

Hi guys.

I have been given a Xeon X5570 processor (same spec as I7 940, but with extra QPI link and a lower TDP).

I will need to get a new mobo and ram to run this processor, but with mobo's being a lot more expensive then they used to be I cant really afford to shell out for the ram at the same time.

Someone I know has a spare DDR3 DIMM, but I was wondering, will the setup even work without 3 DIMM's?

Or will it work fine, but just be running in single channel for the time being until I save up to buy a triple channel set.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers for that!

Obviously, I will endeavour to get hold of a triple channel kit asap (hopefully within a couple of months of the mobo) but I was thinking if it ran single channel then there is no reason why I couldn't get a board sooner and then get the ram later on, rather then waiting for a few months to get it all.

It will be a hell of a lot quicker then my current rig either way!

Yes, single or dual channel will work. Dual channel has a lower latency and for some tasks will perform better than triple channel.

Sell the chip and get a brand new rig if your current 1 is the 1 on your sig.
Ocuk sell it for £1100, worth a thought

Yes, current rig is still as Sig. I bought this setup in '05 or '06 I think! Was decent back then, but its really strugging to run F1 2010 now!

Where would be the best place to sell the chip then? The thought had crossed my mind, but I wasn't sure what it would go for tbh. Being such a high value item I thought it may be difficult to sell, and I have been checking out a popular auction site for the past 2 weeks and I only find people selling X55xx and X56xx chips on 'buy it now' prices, so I had no idea what it would be worth.

Any other suggestions on places to sell the chip?

I think it would sell, there does seem to be low stocks off it everywere i look. The way i would price it is, spec your new machine and theres your price. What prices did you see?

Don't think I have seen this cpu for much less then ~£1200 ish tbh.
But I have no idea if anyone ever buys them for that on the auction site.

Saw an X5560 the other day and watched that auction just to see what that went for; Sold for £460 in the end + £10 P&P

So Hopefully should get ~£600 for it I suppose on there.
That should get me a system a heck of a lot better then what I have aleady :)
