As title really, the loading of web pages etc has been terrible for the past week or so, just tried doing the same on my laptop and it's not really an issue. Could I have a virus. My subscription to Norton is 6 months out of date

Norton wouldn't aid the problem anyway - its awful. A virus or spyware would be the problem. Don't you use AVG (or Avast), SpyBot and AdAware?

What would you recommend instead of Norton?

i use nod32, it seems good (not sure how it compares to others) but uses a lot less resources than norton.

as a general rule norton = slow pc

avg is free but i dont think its very good.

if you want a one off scan google panda active scan

(and google spybot S&D and ADAWARE while your at it.)

Another NOD32 vote here, fantastic AV. I have tried Norton, Mcafee, AVG, Panda and a load of others.

The only other good one I like is Kaspersky.

having out of date AV programs are pretty useless, you might as well not have them installed at all really. Another vote here for NOD. I'd also do a spyware scan with spybot, ad aware and the likes as it could well be some evil spyware hogging your bandwidth. have a clean up, it should help

Could be spyware etc..., i had a problem a few years ago where pages would take a while to come on, then i discovered it was adware, what was happenig was when i was opening a page, this advertising thing was looking through it for adverts, then after it had finished it displayed the page.

May be a bit of a shot in the dark... but are you with NTL by any chance?

:)

I know what you mean I'm on NT HELL and last week I was pulling my hair out reinstalled everything and it was still the same, think of a nasty swear word that's what I think to NT HELL.

Nope eclipse
I had a problem with my internet a while back.

Turned out that Zen had removed the DNS server I was pointing to so it took ages.

Make sure this isn't the case with you. You may find you are getting them automatically, in which case your fine.

AVG Free does have a very good clear up rate. I get to see many different AV products in my job and it is shocking how bad Norton and McAfee are. And you thought Symantec's Norton slows a PC down - you should see what McAfee does!! It's turning up on new PCs now and making them run like sludge.

AVG Free - http://free.grisoft.com
Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.kolla.de
AdAware - http://www.lavasoft.de

If still having problems after these scans, come back here and we'll try HiJackThis to see what else is lurking on the machine. ;)
