Can anyone help me identify this faulty component, please?

Hi all,

My wife's 2006 VW Polo 1.4 FSI developed a fault tonight. The engine management light is now permanently on and there is a component in the engine that is making a 'grinding' noise.

I have attached a few photos of the component. It makes this grinding noise if the ignition is on. The engine does not have to be running. When the engine was running, I noticed it made this noise when accelerating.

Any idea what it is? The nearest VW garage is 5 miles away and I'm a bit worried to drive it there. I've sent the VW garage an email with the photos so I'm hoping I'll get a reply tomorrow with costs.

The component is located on the right-hand side of the engine, on the left-hand side of the battery. There are many pipes coming out of it (black, flexible pipes and a thick rigid, metal pipe going into the block). IMG_0463 shows the rear of the component.

Thanks in advance guys.

Looks to me like it could be an EGR valve, not 100% but looks very similar also its water cooled. Does it make a noise when the engine is running or when turned off ETC??

Thanks for replying :) From what I can remember, it didn't make the noise all the time when idling, but it definitely made it when pressing the throttle lightly.

If you just turn the ignition on, it makes the noise (ie. Engine off). The manual says if the engine symbol is permanently on then its something to do with the exhaust system. Does EGR stand for exhaust gas something?

You can actually feel the component vibrating when it makes the noise. Something inside it isn't happy.

Guess I'll have to wait for VW to reply to my email :(

Actually I guess if it was an electronically actuated EGR rather than vacuum actuated, it may well make a noise with the engine off

Do you think it would be okay to drive to the 5.27 miles to the dealership? The car seemed find when I drove it 3/4 mile home after the noise started.

I still have no idea what an EGR valve is or does :/

Yeh should be fine to drive

The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gasses back into the engine. Something to do with emissions and temperature..... Wont cause any long term harm if you drive it a few miles
