Can anyone identify this connector?

Even people with masters degrees can lack awareness of risks in any manner of things, it's not meant as anything offensive, we all need a reminder from time to time on various things!

You said it was a cheap charger hence the comments about safety, I can see a brand logo on that image looking at it closer, Inateck? They seem to be a decent third party who make various USB and power related stuff like Anker/Choetech. It's just when you hear people mention cheap charger, the worst is assumed because that is typically exactly what it is.

Unless a tweet/message to Inateck gets a response, you probably won't be finding the exact same sliding track on another plug that isn't by the same maker.

Yea sorry, I should have been clearer. When I said cheap I meant not £69 from Apple for the plug and an additional £19 for the cable.

Inateck said they were out of stock of the product that I purchased, when I asked about just a replacement plug they were struggling to understand what I meant. They issued a refund and didn't really want to help any further.

Yeah PAT testing is super effective for the five minutes just before the PAT tester leaves the business

Misleading photos of damaged plugs with PAT stickers on. Clearly not signed off when they were in that state.

Education is the big problem here not a point in time inspection.

As you have the refund, you could perhaps get something like a Dell USB-C laptop charger? Only a bit over £30 and whilst it's 45W vs the 61/65 of the Inateck, it will still charge the laptop
effectively and these chargers are rugged enough to take some beating having had them before: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-Latit...s=USB+c+laptop+charger&qid=1614675096&sr=8-15

Cheers, I probably will end up buying something similar, really hoped I wouldn't have to.

I hate waste and as the one we have has no problem with its function at all other than the bit of broken plastic, I was really hoping to find a replacement plug but it seems harder to find than I'd hoped.

In all seriousness I am amazed that no one has just suggested the obvious, just use a little 2way plug block on it. Jack open the power pins with it unplugged, connect that broken adapter then use it through that from then on.
Do this. It's a plastic pin so it's not earthed anyway.

Ah I see what you mean.

Could do that but in our current rental we are so short for wall sockets that the two she uses to charge this laptop already have extension leads in them. Is it safe to put a block in a 4 way lead? I've always felt weird about it.

No less safe than bodging a broken plug directly into the wall, no.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here? These items were passed (probably not in such bad condition, but this isn't a year worth of damage) and left in use. This is why we PAT test, to remove things from use way before they get to this point because as you say, most people simply don't know better and will use damaged items until they either get a zap or worse.

And yes, I've been in the building maintenance game for 20 years, some of the things I've seen get signed off will blow your mind.

It's not grounded so there's no risk there. The two remaining pins are shielded part way down so even if it slips out, there's zero chance of anyone getting their finger in and if it pops out, the shutters on the socket will close. It's perfectly safe.

If he wants to be sure it won't pull out, cable tie around the plug and the block.

My entire radio shack runs off of a single 13A socket. As long as it's not overloaded, you're fine.

I agreed with you. Infact I suggested it in post #24. I wouldn't say it is perfectly safe otherwise we wouldn't have shuttered sockets but it certainly isn't as unsafe as other electrical bodges.

It is a point in time inspection. The photos you shared could have happened 30 seconds after the PAT tester left. It solves for the outcome not the root cause.

'probably not in as bad condition' - I mean almost certainly not in that condition, right? I didn't even know PAT testing hyperbole existed lol.

I could do that, but she earns tons more than I do so she could just kick me out of the house she contributes far more to :p

If she earns so much more than you then:

A) Why can't she just get another official charger?
B) Why is she forcing you to buy her laptop chargers, whipped much :p

What you want is a 60/65W USB C PD charger
I have a few of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/RAVPower-C...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DN0CQTJNMEJR9DPCFFS3
They are really good, but get a couple of decent USB C PD cables if you want to charge laptops

Alternatively I have a couple of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/TOMMOX-Cha...ld=1&keywords=usb+c+pd&qid=1614684768&sr=8-18

Which are pretty good to and come with 1 USB C PD cable

A) She has an official charger, but it was accidentally packed into a box of our stuff when we moved home from the US, which is kindly being stored for us by a friend over there. We have no idea which box, so we don't want them to have to search through several boxes to find it and then have to go to the post office to post it during a global pandemic.

B) I purchased the laptop charger as I know a bit more about chargers than she does. I then asked on a computer forum I am signed up to about chargers because she isn't signed up to any computer forums.

This really isn't that difficult to fathom.

This plug was fitted to an air curtain. It was fused at 13a and the fuse was clearly never gonna blow, even when the air curtain was at max and drawing over 20a. This air curtain was designed to be connected to a fused spur, not a bloody plug.

The fact that the screws holding the cable in the plug are missing, as well as the insulation woefully inadequate just meant that it was a disaster waiting to happen.

It's one of the nightmares I found when PAT testing this year, and this was signed off as passed last year.

These were also signed off by the same person:

I save these photos for the "herp derp pat testing is stupid" people.

Well clearly it is as it passed year on year.
