I've just taken a shed down and this little fella was lurking on the bottom of it

It looked slightly evil, so I did the correct thing and burnt the entire neighbourhood to the ground to be sure. Can anyone identify what species it is ?

False widow is a good shout. Can give a nasty bite, but by no means deadly (unless allergic/elderly)

We use to see real black widows on a daily basis in the States. Cup em and kill em.

Your south coast location makes a false widow very likely as well.

Do we get more down here?

My garage is absolutely filled with these god damned things. Black as black comes and just nasty looking.. So much so I think I'm just going to sell the garage and abandon anything thats in there. I'm not convinced they are 'false' widows. But I'm not planning on turning them over to look for the red hourglass to find out.

It's rumored they came into the country through Torquay around 150 years ago. They're native to Madeira and the Canary Islands.
