Can anyone identify this spider for me?

You killed one, but more will come to avenge their brother. I suggest stocking up on supplies and ammo while you can.

They're mainly in the south afaik. So avoid the bible belt area (mississippi, Loiusana, South Carolina etc these not really tourist/ex-pat areas anyway) and you'll be fine.

Maybe ;)

North central Florida has Black Widows in abundance. Where my friends live in Gainseville they have Black Widows in their garden.

They also have Banana Spiders making webs around the outside parts of their house. If you think a false widow looks scary you want to try coming unexpectedly face to face with a Banana Spider! I was backing out of a door one night and turned and literally walked face first into one of these http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2006/12/10/female-nephila-clavipes-golden-silk-orb-weaver-3.jpg

I don't mind admitting I cacked my pants and sqeualed like a girl! :D

Florida is part of bible belt country really. Though it is the only real tourist destination of the lot.

Up norf is safe...cept bears, wolves etc :D

Don't like spiders, don't know why I clicked on the link only to be terrified... even when I KNEW it was going to happen.

stupid curiosity!

When threatened or provoked, funnel-web spiders will display aggressive behaviour, rearing up on its hind legs and displaying their fangs.[6][8] When biting, the funnel-web spiders maintain a tight grip on their victim, often biting repeatedly.[8]

Spider bites can be prevented most the time by following a few simple steps

Always shake your clothes/shoes before putting them on
Never stick any part of your body in a place/hole etc that doesn't have good visability
Check bed before getting in

etc etc

**** saves lives. Obv this don't apply to UK, but places like US/AUS it's required.

What about glory holes?

There is a substation at Ironbridge power station that is infested with false widow spiders.

I don't like spiders at the best of times but these things are proper evil, tried poking one with a stick and it seemed to attack the stick!! They can bite but I don't think it is deadly.

Looks like I did the right thing then by obliterating the neighbourhood!

This is the second one I've seen in less than a week, so hopefully theres no more of the little buggers around. Not many places left for them to hide in the garden now at least.
