Ok, the other night I saw the strangest thing and I have absolutely no clue what it could have been.

Thursday night (around 8pm ish) I saw what appeared to be a huge ball of fire floating through the sky, initial reaction was a hot air balloon until I realised that it wouldn't be a huge ball of fire, but a fire at the bottom and a glow elsewhere. Next thought was a firework or ember, as it was bonfire night, it would seem logical, however it lasted around 8 or 9 minutes before just sort of dwindling and disappearing.

When I first saw it, it appeared to be very close and was moving rather erratically, then it moved in a straight line from left to right rather quickly and then diagonally away from the house before staying stationary for about 5 minutes, this made me think of a helicopter, except there was no noise and it had moved a bit too smoothly and erratically at first to have been.

I was so dumbfounded at first that I didn't think to grab my camera, after it had moved away from the house I grabbed a pair of binoculars I had lying around but couldn't get it to focus at all (possibly the age of the things), my mum was in the house at the time so I made her come and look too, she had no idea what it was.

The only thing I've ever read about that moves and acts like this appeared to is ball lightning.

So, has anyone seen anything like this or have any clue what it was that I may have saw?

Chinese lanterns. My neighbour set some off last night. Amazing to watch. All over a bit quick mind as the wind takes them fast.

As stated, they're lanterns
