I was wondering if anyone could read and write music?

I just watched Eat that question a new Frank Zappa Documentary and Its inspired me to maybe have a bash at learning how to do it...

Yeah. I'm very slow at it though. Learned when I started playing bass when I was about 13.

Worked for Sibelius for a few years, software for music composition (in classic musical notation, or quite a few variants).

The key (ahah!) is that there is a myriad of way to read/write music, not all of them very clear and subject to interpretation (ahaha * 2!)

Twas fun tho...

The "auto-harmonise" function on Sibelius was partly responsible for me getting an A in my music GCSE :p

Nope - spent about a month learning about it out of passing interest many years ago from which I think I'd be fairly capable at it but didn't really have a reason to persist with it.

I remember Sibelius from RISC OS/Acorn days - think I still have a boxed up copy of it somewhere (my dad is fairly into that kind of thing and used it for awhile).

EDIT: Found the box for High Risc Racing but not Sibelius :S

Yup, started when I was about 5. Haven't done it for a while though, I was a wizz kid with Sibelius back in school days!

Yes, played in orchestra and wind band from about 8 to 18.
I haven't played for a long time though so I'm pretty rusty...

I passed grade 7 alto saxophone and was learning for grade 9 before I went to Uni. Haven't played since which is a great shame (13 years). I must pick it up again. Probably the hardest thing I could play/read was one of Charlie Parker's solos, I think it was Ornithology but I'm not sure.

Also played drums in bands (taught myself) so could read music for that also.

Yes I can read but much slower than I used to be - I've not written any for years.

The older I get, the more I wish I could have convinced my younger self that theory is hugely important. My now basic knowledge really does help with things like chord construction but way slower than I could be.

I have a few friends that are just on a complete different level with theory and composition. Not much I envy of others but that is one thing.

Yup. I have a music degree and am a composer (or at least trying to be). Have had some slight success with library music. In fact I am writing some music right now :p

Still play trumpet from when I was a lad and gig in a couple of bands.

No idea what level I'm at these days reading wise but fairly comfortable with it.

My advise - get something like a guitar or keyboard and learn whilst using that

Yes i can read music pretty well. I started playing sax in primary school and played in band from the age of 10 to mid 20s. Haven't played in a few years but if you put a piece of music in front of me i could probably do an ok job of it on the first go. Actually writing something is different though, i wouldnt even know where to start to be honest.

Yep, I can read and write music. However I can't "sight play" music, meaning I can't just read any piece of music and play it - I have to read and commit to memory for anything more than a single line melody.
