Panting like a fiend
My Archo gmini XS200 has just been sent back as it's giving me "read error" messages and playing up (shutting down mid track, not playing some tracks unless I reload them etc etc), and I suspect I'll be getting a refund as it's not a model sold any more.

So, can anyone recommend a player that
Costs £100-150
Plays MP3's
Does NOT use any silly software to load the songs onto it (I want straight forward plug and play, the ability to copy the tracks/folders straight over from any machine).
Can have the music sorted by folders (as that is how I have it sorted on my PC).
Storage of 5gb+ is pretty much a must (the Gmini was 20gb and didn't hold all my music as I encode it at high bit rates)

Thanks :)

The creative 8gb hard disc player is pretty nice. Easily replacable battery and if you plug it into a pc without the software, on xp, it just goes on control panel as "Audio device" and lets you copy folders over. Easy :)

This is the one:

I don't own it, my friend does(I'm still stuck on an mp3 cd walkman ) but this thing is very nice. He came on holiday with me so I've used it a lot.

I assume the Zen Micro(non-photo) is the same, but without colour screen, so might be a better choice, as my only complaint with it was the screen in sunlight being hard to read.

can you stretch to £159? because the 20gb iaudio m5 (m5L @ £169 - 35 hour battery life) does everything you want with 20gb of storage space, very good sound quality and it also supports flac.

Yeah i'll second this. I got one at Christmas, the interface is really good and its just drag-and-drop rather than having to use special software. I got my m5 for £150 because the website had a special offer at Christmas. The battery life is really good, but if you want even longer get the M5L. My dad got one of these after seeing mine and the battery goes on for at least twice as long. The player is a bit thicker tho, thats the only downside.

the mcody m-20 2gb is excellent, and looks far better than any other player. They are new, and cost about £90. They have good sound quality, and has a white OLED screen, and is operated by touch sensors.

Samsung YH-J70 - USB host - UMS - colour screen - v small - 20gig... about £129 these days.

Yep, very good indeed. I loved the fact of drag and drop too. My ZVM that replaced mine wipes the floor with it though :p

iAudio M5 20gb. I've got a X5 and it's pretty damn good, the only difference between that and the M5 is a colour screen and video playback, so I'd definitely recommend it. Sound quality wise, the iAudios are amongst the best mp3 players out there, surpassing the likes of Apple's iPod etc.

cheers the iaudio sounds good (no pun intended), i'll probably get that if I get a refund from my dodgy player :) (hopefully i'll hear back this week)

iAudio is £160 right - a video iPod or Creative Zen Vision M can be had for £180 - is it not worth saving for one of those? Mind you the iAudio prob has a tad better sound quality (but u missing video).

Cowon iAudio products are the best sounding DAPs since the Rio Karma, most have outstanding battery life and require no software to transfer music, I'd recommend the M5/X5 above a similar Creative/Apple player even if it was a good deal more expensive.
